FA Playmaker (Introductory)
For: Beginners, parents, volunteers, and grassroots helpers.
Enables you to: Assist with coaching or running sessions under supervision.
Level: Not a formal qualification, but a free online course to get involved in grassroots football.
Best for: Supporting roles in youth or community clubs.
FA Level 1 (Now replaced by “Introduction to Coaching Football”)
For: Entry-level coaches.
Enables you to: Lead training sessions for grassroots youth teams under the age of 18.
Includes: Planning safe, fun, and inclusive sessions; basic principles of play.
Typically used for: Coaching U7 to U12 teams, though valid for all grassroots age groups.
FA Level 2 (Now called “UEFA C Licence”)
For: Coaches looking to progress beyond basic grassroots coaching.
Enables you to: Plan, deliver, and evaluate more structured sessions and manage a team more independently.
Includes: Player development, matchday coaching, team shape, transitions.
Typically used for: Managing grassroots youth and adult teams, U13+.
Minimum requirement: To manage at many competitive grassroots levels.
UEFA B Licence (Previously FA Level 3)
For: Experienced coaches aiming to work at semi-professional or academy level.
Enables you to: Coach teams with tactical and technical depth, including 11-a-side teams at higher youth levels, semi-pro clubs, and in academies.
Includes: In-depth match analysis, team strategies, individual player development plans.
Typically used for: Senior teams, U16+, elite development, and lower-tier non-league.
UEFA A Licence
For: High-level coaches aiming for professional environments.
Enables you to: Coach professional clubs, elite youth teams (e.g. U18s, U21s), and be eligible for head coach/manager roles in the English Football League and top academies.
Includes: Advanced tactical understanding, performance analysis, team management at elite levels.
